Cardiff by the Sea

In 1911 this former farming community north of the San Elijo Lagoon began to develop when Boston developer J. Frank Cullen broke ground to build new homes. Cardiff’s local landmark and business’ draw people from all over the country: Cardiff Crack, VG’s, the Kook.

Often referred to as just Cardiff, is a beach community located between Encinitas and Solana Beach. Encinitas on its east and north border and the beach and lagoon is to its south. With a population of under 12,000, Cardiff-by-the-Sea operates as part of the city of Encinitas. Over eighty years ago, this farming community in the hills north of the San Elijo Lagoon, began to take root and grow. Many streets in Cardiff bear UK names such as Birmingham, Oxford, Chesterfield, and Manchester because the original developer grew up in England.

Cardiff is famous for its surfing but offers a wide range of water-related activities such as swimming, sunbathing, windsurfing, parasailing, and just walking along the beach.
